We experience some very heavy rains here in upstate SC which can create a huge amount of run-off water in a short amount of time. And our soil--mostly clay or a clay mix--just cannot absorb the rain as quickly as it comes down.
Rain gardens can offer a workable solution. Our goal is to re-direct, and then contain this excess water, then turn this problem area into an attractive part of your landscape.
We carefully observe the natural flow of water, and then design a catch basin. We can give you a design and directions and you can DIY the prep work and just get plants from us, or we can do it for you. We dig, create berms, amend the soil, and provide appropriate plants.
You can see how much water can be captured from just one rainstorm! The rain garden is designed to catch and absorb: you will see maximum catchment right after the rainstorm, and then the water will begin to reduce. The standing water will be gone in one day usually, sometimes two.
Plants placed in your rain garden help to absorb the excess rainfall. We will provide plants that thrive in this environment: plants that "like to have their feet wet" but don't need or want standing water full time.
We can provide small plants that will grow to fill your garden to help your budget, or full-size plants if you prefer.
When done properly, rain gardens not only serve a very practical purpose, but also add to the beauty of your landscape and home.
